What are Digital and Communication Technologies?

The first time I heard digital and communication technologies I immediately thought of my iPhone. The word digital made me think of technology devices and the word communication made me think about talking. Naturally I put these two together and thought of mobile phones. However, I soon found out after thinking about the term I discovered digital and communication technologies reach beyond just mobile phones.

Digital and communication technologies is the communications and interactions which can be made by two or more people over a digital format. These communications can be made through written, spoken, or visual communication.

Example of communications technology mediums would be social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter as written communications, Snapchat, Instagram and Skype as visual communications and WhatsApp, phone calls and Viber as spoken communications.

However, digital communication technologies does not strictly limit itself to social media and social networking but rather the scope of digital communications is also the advancements in physical technologies and things that link the world. The rise of digital and communication technologies has also been the main driving force behind the rapid globalisation of the world and our growing ease of connectivity with others around the world.

The result of this sudden rise in digital and communication technologies is that it has now become a part of our every day lives. Because of this technology is now deeply integral to most occupations and industries today. One area that digital and communication technology has been recently focused on is education. Interactive whiteboards, powerpoint presentations, educational videos and even digital games all full under the categories of digital communication technologies and it may also change the way in which students learn and process information.
